Oxfam HK- Fundraising for Clean Water in Rural China
(22nd March 2009)
Clean water is a basic human right - so it is astounding that in this day and age, people still live a daily life without access to clean water. This especially affects the young and elderly residents. This event was held on World Water Day.
This clean water and country road construction project is for Xiaoxinzhai village of Jiuwuji Township, Yunnan Province. As Xiao Xinzhai Village is one of the poorest villages in Jiu Wuji Township at Luoping County, the villages has faced the economics problem due to the lack of water and traffic network, affecting the agriculture development. The annual income of each village is around RMB625. To improve the farming and livelihood standard for villages, this project will build a 500 M3 water reservoir which will supply water to 62 water tanks of households and 900 m country road.
The main objectives of this project: a) Improve condition of water drinking for 62 households, b) Reduce the water shortage period from 180days to 0day, c) Reduce the traffic time and the workload of villagers, d) Improve the economics standard of the village and e) Strengthen the self-management capacity of villagers.
